Abstract

Mythology has many great warriors and leaders, may it be Greek, Roman or Indian. Leaders of par excellence were born and set standards and lessons to all ages at greater horizons. New age leaders need to explore a lot from their lives. So an attempt is made to explore the contrasting virtues of Mars and Minerva, two powerful deities in Roman mythology, and how their harmonious interplay can offer valuable insights for modern leaders seeking a balanced approach to leadership. The article suggests that successful leaders must possess both resilience and strategic acumen, and the harmonious interplay of Mars's strength and `Minerva’s wisdom that creates a powerful combination. By embracing the strength of Mars and the wisdom of Minerva, leaders can navigate challenges with resilience, make informed decisions, and foster a culture of collaboration. This symbiotic relationship between Mars and Minerva offers a timeless blueprint for leadership, inspiring leaders to achieve greatness while ensuring sustainable success in the complex and dynamic world of leadership. Overall, it highlights the importance of a balanced approach to leadership, where leaders can draw inspiration from both Mars and Minerva to create a potent blend of qualities that can guide their teams towards success

INTRODUCTION

In the pantheon of Roman mythology, Mars and Minerva stand as powerful embodiments of contrasting virtues that, when harmonized, form a potent blend for effective leadership. They are distinct deities, each associated with specific attributes and domains. Mars is primarily known as the god of war. His domain includes the brutality and chaos of battle, and he is often depicted as a fierce warrior in full armor, armed with a spear and shield.  Mars embodies qualities such as strength, courage, assertiveness, and martial prowess. He is revered for his ability to lead armies to victory and overcome obstacles through sheer force. However, Minerva is a multifaceted goddess associated with wisdom, strategic warfare, arts, and crafts. While she is not a war deity in the same sense as Mars, she plays a crucial role in the strategic aspects of conflict. Minerva's specialties include wisdom, intellect, strategic thinking, and diplomacy. She is often portrayed as a wise and prudent goddess, emphasizing the importance of intelligence and planning in the face of challenges.

 

Mars and Minerva are sometimes invoked together, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach to leadership. The harmonious interplay of Mars's strength and Minerva's wisdom creates a powerful combination that suggests successful leaders must possess both resilience and strategic acumen.

 

LEADERSHIP QUALITIES:

Leaders seeking inspiration from Mars focus on assertiveness, resilience, and the ability to make decisive decisions. Mars teaches the importance of facing challenges head-on and maintaining discipline in the pursuit of goals, whereas Minerva inspires leaders to adopt a thoughtful and strategic approach. Leaders influenced by Minerva emphasize diplomacy, careful planning, and the cultivation of intellectual resources to navigate complex situations. It is the need of the hour to delve into the dynamic interplay between these two deities, exploring how their attributes offer valuable insights for modern leaders seeking a balanced approach to guiding their teams.

 

MARS - THE GOD OF STRENGTH AND COURAGE:

Sam Palazzo in his blog “Are You a Leader like Mars, Roman God of War?” said that ‘Mars is known for being god of strength as he was god of war, one of the most prominent and worshipped gods, god of spring, growth in nature, and fertility, son of Jupiter and Juno, father of Romulus and Remus. Romans style themselves 'Sons of Mars', the male symbol is named after him representing his spear/shield, and the month of March is named after him’. It’s been said that business is war. In order to accomplish victory in such “battles” it’s important to keep in mind not only what will be gained in such moments, but also what very well might be lost. To be the best leader possible, one has to aim higher, think bigger, and act fiercely. 

 

Mars, often depicted in armor with a spear and shield, personifies the raw power and martial prowess associated with effective leadership. His relentless pursuit of victory on the battlefield teaches the importance of strength and determination in overcoming challenges. A leader can draw inspiration from Mars by cultivating resilience, instilling a sense of discipline within the team, and embracing the challenges that come with leadership.

 

MARS IN 21ST CENTURY:

Mars embodies the qualities of a commander, motivating and directing people towards a common goal. It is associated with the military and the power to lead an army or defend one’s territory. Furthermore, Mars is said to be related to the field of mechanical engineering and technology. In the modern corporate world, leaders embody the qualities of Mars by being proactive, ambitious, and having a strong drive and energy to achieve their goals. They are also able to strategize and execute plans effectively. However, the energy of Mars can also manifest as anger, aggression, and impulsiveness, which can lead to conflicts and disputes. Therefore, modern corporate leaders need to channelize their Mars-like qualities properly to avoid negative consequences. There are several examples of how Mars' leadership style has been applied in modern corporate settings.

 

Modern corporate leaders have applied Mars' leadership style to promote diversity and inclusion through various initiatives and strategies. For instance, Mars, the candy company, has made diversity their competitive advantage by taking full advantage of their strong organizational culture. Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla Motors, embodies the qualities of a commander, motivating and directing people towards a common goal, which are associated with the characteristics of Mars. He is known for his visionary and ambitious leadership style, mapping out ambitious goals such as having humans land on Mars and challenging the status quo. Furthermore, modern corporate leaders are increasingly being demanded by stakeholders to do more than to provide good products and services, but also to have a purpose-driven leadership style that serves all stakeholders.

 

THE VIRTUE OF ASSERTIVENESS:

Mars's assertiveness is a key aspect of his character. Leaders can learn from his decisive nature, understanding when to take bold actions and make tough decisions. However, it's crucial to strike a balance, as excessive aggression may lead to unintended consequences. Furthermore, modern corporate leaders, inspired by the growing push for fairness and equality, have championed purpose-driven leadership that prioritizes serving all stakeholders and the greater world, not just shareholders. This approach aligns with the inclusive leadership qualities associated with Mars, the god of war, as it emphasizes fairness, equality, and a multi-stakeholder-centric purpose lies in channeling Mars's assertiveness into positive and constructive leadership.

 

BUILDING A RESILIENT TEAM

The story of Mars, Rhea Silvia, and the birth of Romulus and Remus can be paralleled in the modern leadership context, where resilience, breaking norms, and adapting to circumstances are crucial.

  1. Embracing Resilience Amid Adversity: Modern leaders often face restrictions—whether structural, societal, or imposed by industry standards—similar to Rhea Silvia’s chastity vow. However, leaders who display resilience, like Rhea Silvia, find ways to fulfill their missions despite these challenges. This is seen in leaders who innovate under strict regulations or navigate financial limitations to achieve meaningful goals. The resilience to push through restrictions resonates with Rhea Silvia’s story and the ultimate impact her sons had on founding Rome.

This is evident in figures like Elon Musk or Steve Jobs, who, despite initial skepticism and industry resistance, took paths that reshaped their fields.

In each case, resilience against norms and dedication to a larger vision are central. Just as Mars and Rhea Silvia’s legacy impacted Rome’s identity, present-day leaders who embrace resilience and challenge limitations can set the foundation for transformative, lasting change.

 

The qualities of Mars that modern leaders could learn from include: Leadership and Command:, Strategic Approach and Precision, Resilience and Integrative Leadership,  Inclusive Leadership and Trust, and Diversity as a Competitive Advantage. Mars represents the ability to take charge, make decisions, and guide others towards a common goal. Modern leaders can learn from this quality by embodying a visionary and ambitious leadership style, motivating and directing people toward shared objectives. Lessons from interplanetary projects like the Mars missions emphasize the need for resilience, flexibility, decisiveness, and integration in leadership. In the context of long-duration space missions, such as the journey to Mars, leadership is associated with the need for trust, inclusivity, and the ability to balance and coordinate leadership effectively within diverse teams. Modern leaders can learn from this by prioritizing inclusive leadership and building trust within their organizations.

 

Mars’s relentless determination on the battlefield symbolizes leaders who push forward, staying focused on their vision despite challenges. Leaders like Malala Yousafzai demonstrate this Mars-like resilience; despite facing threats and attacks, she continues to advocate for girls’ education, embodying resilience in her fight for equality.

 

Mars was seen as a protector of Rome, always defending its people and values. Modern leaders like Angela Merkel and Nelson Mandela displayed this protective resilience by putting their nations’ well-being above personal gain. Merkel’s steady leadership during the 2008 financial crisis and Mandela’s dedication to reconciling a divided South Africa showcase the protective role leader’s play, upholding resilience in the face of societal turmoil.

 

Just as Mars inspired soldiers to persevere under harsh conditions, modern leaders in high-stakes industries, such as Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk, operate with resilience in demanding environments. In sectors like technology and space exploration, these leaders embody Mars’s strength by tackling enormous challenges head-on, such as Musk’s pursuit of sustainable space travel despite multiple setbacks.

 

Mars’s defiance in pursuing a lineage through Rhea Silvia, despite her status as a Vestal Virgin, reflects how resilience sometimes means breaking barriers. Leaders like Ruth Bader Ginsburg exemplify this trait. Despite systemic challenges as a woman in law, she broke constraints to champion gender equality, becoming a symbol of resilience against societal norms.

MINERVA - THE GODDESS OF WISDOM AND STRATEGY

Her domain extends beyond the battlefield, emphasizing the importance of intellect and careful planning in leadership. Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, was also associated with medicine, commerce, handicrafts, poetry, the arts, and later, war. She was not a patron of violence like Mars, but of strategic war and victory.

 

 Minerva was commonly identified with the Greek goddess Athena and was part of the Capitoline triad, along with Jupiter and Jun. Her worship as a goddess of war encroached upon that of Mars, and under the emperor Domitian, the worship of Minerva attained great popularity in Rome. Minerva is often depicted with an owl, symbolizing wisdom, and was highly visible in the contexts of education, civics, and the state in ancient Rome. Her shrine on the Aventine in Rome was a meeting place for guilds of craftsmen, further emphasizing her association with the arts and commerce.

 

In today's corporate world, Minerva's qualities of wisdom, strategic thinking, and patronage of the arts and commerce can be seen as relevant and valuable. Modern leaders can learn from Minerva's association with wisdom and strategic war, applying these qualities to make well-informed decisions and steer complex business environments. Additionally, her connection to the arts, commerce, and crafts can inspire leaders to appreciate and support creativity, innovation, and skilled craftsmanship within their organizations. Minerva's role as a patron of education and civics also highlights the importance of knowledge, learning, and civic responsibility in contemporary leadership and corporate governance.

Minerva's strategic acumen serves as a guide for leaders in developing a clear vision for their organizations.
